How it works: Automatic defrost system
Sounds like there is a problem with the sensing bulb or the control board
Defrost sensor bulb in compartment located on the back of the freezer behind freezer wall.
Press the defrost pad (located in the bottom right corner) for a few seconds and release. If the defrost light bulb is lit after 3 seconds, this is a normal operation. If the light bulb is not lit, the unit is not defrosting.
If the defrost light bulb does not come on, check the defrost sensor bulb for loose connection, damage, etc.
If the bulb is good, replace the control board. If the bulb is not good, replace the defrost sensor bulb.
If the defrost sensor bulb is good and the control board is bad, the module is available for purchase as a factory replacement part.
The module is located on the back of the freezer behind freezer wall.
Remove the module and replace with new module and close cover. Exit diagnostic mode by pressing and holding the defrost pad for 20 seconds.
If the display panel is active, run a complete defrost cycle using the defrost heating element in the freezer. The complete defrost cycle lasts approximately 45 minutes and the dispenser will not work during this time.
Other options:
• Remove the control panel and locate the thermistor.
• Connect an ohmmeter across the thermistor terminals.
• Power on the microwave.
• The ohmmeter measures in either an open or closed circuit.
• If the ohmmeter reads open circuit before defrost, the thermistor is bad and needs to be replaced.
This is a well engineered and designed appliance, which has only occasionally needed service over the years.
I have replaced the light bulb in the display panel 3 or 4 times over the years. I went to the GE parts site and ordered the bulb. It came in a couple of days and was about $3.00.
The main board went out on my unit about 10 years ago. I was able to order a new board from GE part site and install it. I don’t remember how much it was but it probably was $150 – $200.
