What is freezer pie filling?

Freezer Pie Filling
Frozen fruit and berry pie fillings are made with all fruit or fruit mixed with a sweetener. True fruit fillings are made with water and fruit, usually a little starch, and nothing else. They’re delicious and all-natural. Although I haven’t included a recipe for a true fruit filling here, you can find several in my other books including The Complete Book of Pies and The All-American Dessert Book. Obviously, you can’t make a cooked custard pie out of any frozen filling, but you can use them in uncooked pies, free-form pies, and pies where the filling doesn’t get cooked at all, such as cream pies, ice cream pies, chiffon pies, and mousse pies.

There are a lot of commercial fruit fillings on the market now in jars and pouches. I have used many of them in my testing and found a few to be especially good. If you want something quick and easy, try the Comstock Frozen Pie Fillings (both the regular and the no-sugar-added varieties), the Stouffer’s Dessert Complements Frozen Fruit Fillings, and the Dole Berry Pie Filling (the Dole and Stouffer’s pie fillings are freezer aisle items).

The benefits of using freezer pie filling

There are many benefits of using freezer pie filling. When preparing a pie for a large group, making all of the filling and pastry at once instead of making it one piece at a time saves a lot of time. It also allows you to make large amounts of filling without having to worry about it spoiling before you use it.

You can take advantage of bulk sales by buying large amounts of fruit for freezer pie filling. Since the fruit is already cooked and preserved, you do not have to worry about it spoiling before you have used it. This allows you to buy fruit in bulk and freeze it.

You can also make large quantities of pie filling in advance and freeze it. This is especially useful if you are making a large number of pies for an event or if you want to have a large number of pies on hand for yourself or your family.

Using a freezer pie filling to make your own pies is more cost effective than buying them premade. You do not have to pay for the convenience of not having to make your own pie filling.

How to make your own freezer pie filling

1/2 cup sugar

1/3 cup cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 cups water
1 ½ cups mashed fresh fruit or berries, or canned fruit
1 ½ teaspoons lemon juice
¼ teaspoon almond extract

Mix sugar, cornstarch, salt, and water in a saucepan.
Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture is thickened and bubbly.
Stir in fruit, cover and remove from heat.
Let cool to room temperature, stir in lemon juice and almond extract.
Put in a freezer-safe container and freeze.
When you need a pie, defrost the filling for about 1 hour.

Tip: Add a 1 tablespoon of butter and 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon to the freezer container, then pour in the filling. The butter prevents the fruit from freezing into a hard lump. Just before you make the pie, remove the cinnamon stick and use the melted butter in place of the butter or lard called for in your pie crust recipe.

How to use freezer pie filling

Frozen pie filling is a great foundation for all sorts of pies, from berries to cream fillings. It’s also a great recipe to have on hand if you ever need to make something quick and easy.

The recipe is fairly simple, and it’s not too time consuming. All you need to do is make your favorite pie crust, then fill it with the prepared filling. You can use a store bought crust if you’re in a rush, but homemade is definitely better.

Then, you’ll want to bake the pie for about an hour. In the last five minutes of baking, you can brush the crust with a beaten egg white and sprinkle it with sugar to get a nice, shiny finish.

After the pie has cooled, you can serve it immediately, or you can freeze it for later. The pie will stay fresh in the freezer for up to a month.

This recipe is a great way to save a lot of time and effort. It’s a great way to make sure you have a delicious dessert on hand for any occasion.
