What is freezer french toast?
Freezer French toast casserole is a make-ahead breakfast that’s perfect to feed a crowd. You can make it in the evening and then just pop it in the oven in the morning. The overnight french toast casserole is also a great way to feed a large group and make feeding a crowd easy. Serve this for Christmas morning breakfast or on busy school mornings.
What Is Freezer French Toast?
Freezer French toast is a quick and easy recipe that can be prepped ahead of time and frozen. I use it for so many things, but my favorite is for overnight guests. When we have overnight guests, I can pop it in the oven while I’m making coffee and the smell of the french toast casserole baking always gets a “what are you making” from the kids.
What Ingredients Are In Freezer French Toast?
French toast casserole ingredients are pantry and freezer staples you’ll probably already have on hand. For the french toast casserole, I use:
Bread – You can use a loaf of bread or Texas toast to make the freezer french toast. I like using Texas toast because it’s thicker and holds up better in the casserole.
Eggs – The eggs help bind the casserole together and give it a great texture. I use whole eggs or egg whites, depending on what we have in the house.
Milk – The milk helps give this freezer french toast the best texture and flavor. You can use any type of milk you have on hand, including non-dairy milk.
Cinnamon – A little cinnamon adds the best flavor to this freezer french toast. I prefer to use a cinnamon that’s ground, but you can use cinnamon sticks if that’s what you have on hand.
Pumpkin Puree – This recipe is perfect for fall and winter when pumpkin puree is so easily available at the store. It adds a great seasonal flavor to the french toast casserole.
Brown Sugar – The brown sugar adds a little sweetness and flavor to the french toast casserole. You can use regular brown sugar or brown sugar substitutes.
How to make freezer french toast
Freezer French Toast is a simple way to start your day. This recipe can be ready to bake in the morning or you can prepare and freeze to bake later. Full of delicious maple flavor and crunchy pecans this recipe is a delicious way to start your day!
Prepare a 13×9 pan by lining with parchment paper and spray bottom and sides with a non-stick spray.
In a large bowl whisk together the eggs, milk, maple syrup, butter, vanilla and salt until well blended. Stir in the pecans.
Place half of the bread cubes into the pan. Pour half of the liquid mixture over the bread. Top with the remaining bread. Pour the remaining liquid mixture over the bread. Cover the pan tightly with foil and freeze until ready to bake.
When ready to bake preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake for 35-45 minutes until top is golden brown. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.
This recipe is wonderful for guests – you prepare the bread the night before and bake it the next morning.
The benefits of freezer french toast
For most of us, school mornings are hectic. Who wouldn’t want to have a stress free morning with a delicious breakfast ready to go? I’m not sure if I’m alone in this, but breakfast is hands down my favorite meal of the day. We started making freezer French toast a couple of years ago, and I can’t believe I haven’t shared it yet. Seriously, it’s a game-changer! This is a staple in our house, and we make it almost every week!
Before we get into the recipe, I think it’s important to mention that you’ll need freezer bags to store the French toast. You’ll need to make sure the freezer bags are thicker, so the milk won’t leak out of them.
Melt butter in a frying pan, and fry the slices on both sides until golden brown.
Top with maple syrup and berries. Serve warm.
The drawbacks of freezer french toast
If you have a loaf of bread destined for the freezer, you might be tempted to make a batch of freezer-friendly french toast. After all, if you can make the french toast and store it in the freezer, you can simply thaw and cook it when you want.
But freezer french toast has two drawbacks.
1. The texture won’t be quite right when you thaw and cook it.
2. The soggy texture makes it difficult to spread on toppings (and eating freezer-soggy french toast is not fun).
The result is soggy, often rubbery french toast that doesn’t taste like you intended it to taste.
When you make french toast, you want the bread to be slightly firm so that it crisps on the exterior when you cook it, but soft enough to taste eggy and custardy in the interior. When you freeze french toast, the texture changes dramatically. When you thaw it, the french toast will have a rubbery, soggy texture that’s unpleasant to chew.
