How to replace the freezer evaporator fan
1. Remove the evaporator cover
Unplug the refrigerator and remove the evaporator cover.
2. Unclip the evaporator fan
Unclip the evaporator fan from the evaporator.
3. Clip the new evaporator fan
Clip the new evaporator fan in place.
4. Reassemble the refrigerator
Reverse the above steps to reassemble the refrigerator.
Tools needed: Screwdriver, wire cutters/strippers, soldering iron
1. Locate the Evaporator Fan
Begin by opening the freezer door. If the refrigerator lights are on, wait for the compressor to turn off. This can take up to 10 minutes after the light goes out.
2. Remove the Freezer Wall
To remove the freezer wall, access the inside of the refrigerator by removing the bottom front grill or kick panel.
3. Remove Nut and Grommet
The nut and grommet are used to connect a wire harness to the condenser fan motor. Remove them with a nut driver and pair of pliers.
4. Remove the Freezer Basket
A freezer basket at the bottom of the freezer compartment usually is removable and often has a water collection tray.
5. Remove the Evaporator Fan
Remove the evaporator cover which will expose the fan and motor assembly. The fan and motor assembly are secured to the freezer with a mounting bracket. Use a nut driver to remove the mounting bracket.
6. Remove the Fan and Motor Assembly
The fan and motor assembly are secured with a mounting bracket. Remove the nut and grommet by loosening the mounting bracket.
7. Remove the Evaporator Cover
After the mounting bracket is loosened, the evaporator cover can be removed from the freezer.
8. Remove the Evaporator Fan
With the mounting bracket removed, the evaporator cover can be removed from the freezer. Carefully avoid damage to the evaporator coils and wiring harness.
9. Install the New Fan and Motor Assembly
After the old evaporator fan and motor have been removed, install the new one by reversing the previous steps.
10. Reinstall the Evaporator Cover
Carefully avoid damage to the evaporator coils and wiring harness. Reinstall the evaporator cover by reversing the previous steps.
Steps: Remove old evaporator fan from freezer compartment
Your freezer space is designed without a fan or blower, but most refrigerators require an evaporator fan to keep items in the refrigerator at a constant cold temperature. The evaporator fan is installed in the freezer compartment, where cool air is blown down into the refrigerator, and it must be removed to access the fan and make repairs or replace it with a new one.
1. Turn Off the Power
Before you begin any work on your refrigerator, turn off the power to the appliance. In most cases, this will involve unplugging the refrigerator.
2. Gain Access to Fan Compartment
Open the freezer compartment of the refrigerator and locate the fan. It is a small component that can be found in the back of the compartment, but it may also be located in the refrigerator compartment behind the freezer.
3. Remove Screws
Remove the screws holding the fan in place. Place the screws in a safe location where they won’t be misplaced or lost.
4. Remove the Fan
With the screws removed, the fan should lift easily out of the compartment. Pull it away to gain access to the wires that lead from the fan to the refrigerator.
5. Disconnect Wiring
Remove the wire connector that links the fan and the refrigerator. This will give you access to the fan motor, which can then be pulled out of the compartment. Use a screwdriver to remove the motor and set it aside.
6. Install Replacement Motor
Install the new motor in the same manner as the original. Install the new fan or reattach the original fan to the compartment.
7. Reconnect Wiring
Reattach the wiring connector to the new fan or original fan and replace the fan in the compartment. Replace the screws in the area, and install the cover for the fan compartment.
8. Replace Shelves
Replace the shelves and items inside the freezer compartment. Restore power to the refrigerator, and test the freezer fan to ensure it is working properly.

Solder wires from new fan to old harness
i have replaced the evaporator fan and now i am trying to wire the new fan to the old harness. old fan was 2 wire harness and new fan has 3 wires. i believe i need to wire together the 2 wires from new fan to the 2 wires from old fan. does this make sense. there is also a ground wire from old harness not sure where to attach it to. thanks in advance for any help you can give me
You have to wire in the two together like you said. If you have a ground wire on the new fan, I would assume that it is the black wire and not replace the existing one on the old harness that is taped to the body of the evaporator. A green, yellow, or white wire should be the ground wire. Should not be difficult if you have the proper tools.
The fan should be grounded to the body of the evaporator. If it is not grounded it makes for a potential shock hazard.
I am assuming that you are working on a stand-up freezer with an external condenser. If the freezer is a frost free model it will be a pain in the neck. You will have to remove the front panel and strip insulation from the end of the wire. There is a small tab on the rear inside of the panel for you to attach the wire to.
Also recommend that you replace the air baffle or damper while you are in there. A new damper should cost less than $10.00
