One cause of grinding sounds from your dryer when you start it up is a failing drive motor. The drive motor rotates the dryer drum and works with the idler pulley to rotate the drum. You’ll likely need to replace the drive motor if this is the source of the grinding noise.
Fix: To replace the drive motor, remove the screws securing the lower-front panel and pull out the panel. Unplug the door switch wire harness and the wire harness from the drive motor. Then, unscrew and remove the drive motor. by screws. Remove the drive motor mounting bracket from the cabinet by removing the screws securing it to the cabinet. Then a flat head screwdriver may be helpful to pry off the mounting bracket from the cabinet. Remove the drive motor and install the new one.
Another possible cause of the grinding noise is damaged drum bearings. The drum bearing supports the rear of the dryer drum. Over the bearings are worn out, they can cause the dryer to make a grinding noise. On some models, you can check the drum bearing for wear by pulling out the dryer’s back panel and looking at it.
Fix: If the drum bearings are worn out, replace them. You can need to remove the dryer’s rear panel to do this. Some models will let you watch the drum bearing in action by taking out the dryer’s front panel and removing the front panel support screws.
Fix: To replace the repair idler pulley, remove the screws securing the front of the dryer cabinet. Take off the front portion of the cabinet by removing the screws that secure it to the sides and front. Then, remove the cabinet’s clips along the top edge of the cabinet. Lift off the cabinet and set it aside. Then, disconnect the door switch wire harness from the door switch. Remove the screws securing the front bulkhead to the dryer cabinet and remove the bulkhead. Next, disconnect the wire harness from the thermal fuse. Remove the screws securing the drum support rollers and take out the drum support rollers from the rear bulkhead. Then, disconnect the wires from the motor and board. Remove the screws securing the motor control board to the front bulkhead and remove the board from the bulkhead. Finally, disconnect the wire harness from the idler pulley, remove the screw securing the idler pulley to the bracket and the bracket to the front. and remove the idler pulley from the cabinet. Install the new idler pulley in the reverse order of removal. Reconnect the wire harnesses and reinstall the drum support rollers, motor control board, front bulkhead, cabinet, and screws front panel.
Another possible cause of the grinding noise is a worn out drum glide bearing. The drum glide bearing helps the drum rotate smoothly and quietly. If the drum glide bearing wears out, it can cause the drum to make a grinding noise.
Fix: To replace the drum glide bearing, start by removing the drum. Then, remove the belt from the drive motor. Next, take off the drum support rollers and the drum glide bearing. Install the new drum glide bearing in the reverse order of removal. Replace the drum support rollers and install the belt back on the drive motor. Then, put the drum back into the dryer cabinet.
Fix: To replace the belt on the dryer’s motor pulley, open the cabinet and remove the screws securing the lower front panel. Then, slide out the lower front panel. Disconnect the wires harnesses from the door switch and idler pulley. Next, remove the lower bulkhead from the cabinet by removing its screws
